The Park Badlands National Park, South Dakota, was established in 1978 after being declared a National Monument in 1929. It protects one of the largest remaining undisturbed prairies in the United States as well as the rugged and colorful badlands of South Dakota. The southern unit is jointly managed by the Oglala Lakota tribe and preserves sites of the “ghost dances” performed in the late 1800s.
